Bath – Britain’s Georgian Gem
Bath is the oldest, best preserved Georgian City in Britain, famous since Roman times for its mineral springs. Although the Wiltshire border is within a short distance, the Bath countryside is unmistakably part of the West Country. The magnificence of its stone-fronted houses is reflected in surrounding villages, in which its stone cottages and manor houses are as good as anything found in the Britain.
The city dates back to AD 44 when it became an important Roman settlement, Bath was also prosperous throughout the Middle Ages. Its creation as a showpiece of Georgian architecture was the work of the architect John Wood, whose building plans were backed by the Duke of Chandos and by Ralph Allen, a wealthy philanthropist and postal pioneer. The development of Bath as a place for high society owed much to Beau Nash, a talented dandy who brought the Elite of London to the baths and to the balls and assemblies. This legacy remains today through the novels of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Today Bath is a residential town, but its celebrated architecture draws visitors from all over who also seek the pleasant country around it.
The Roman baths are among the best preserved in England and adjoin the 18th century Pump Room. The abbey is also close by. To the North is the famous Circus, designed by John Wood, the Royal Crescent and one of Bath’s most impressive public buildings, the Upper Assembly Rooms. For self-catering holiday-makers, Bath and its surrounding countryside is ideal. A good number of picturesque and historically important towns can be found close by and are within easy access to any rented cottage property both in and outside the city.
Claverton
One of the creators of Georgian Bath, Ralph Allen can be found in the churchyard. Its manor house is the home of the first museum celebrating American life to be opened in Britain. The furniture and exhibits have been brought from America, and include items dealing with the art of the Red Indians and with many aspects of American history.
Combe Hay
A village of attractive holiday cottages overlooking a stream. Adjoining its church, the lawns of the Georgian Combe Hay Manor House slope down to an ornamental lake. There are great walks to be had including a steep circular track that runs for about 2 miles, passing Fortnight Farm and then dropping south via Week Farm back to Combe Hay.
Frome
A busy market town on the River Frome full of steep, narrow streets. Cheap Street is extremely quaint and there are fine buildings from a variety of periods including, 18th century almshouses situated close to the river. Frome is a good centre from which to explore Bath and Wells, Cheddar and eastern Somerset locations.
Hinton Charterhouse
This village was named after the 13th century Carthusian priory which is situated a mile north-east of the village.
Mells
One of the most beautiful villages in Somerset with thatched cottage properties, stone houses and a large collection of small, attractive greens. It boasts a Tudor manor house, with gabled roofs and mullioned windows. There are also four prehistoric camps near Mells: Cadbury Camp, Tedbury Camp, Newbury Camp; and Kingsdown Camp.
Midsomer Norton
A small town set on the River Somer, which was actually named after Midsummer Day: the date of the festival of the church’s Patron Saint, St John the Baptist. In the church is a statue of Charles II, who is thought to have hidden in nearby Welton Manor during the Civil War.
Monkton Combe
This hamlet of ancient stone cottages in situated in a deep wooded combe beside a small river. It is overlooked from the north by Combe Down, which affords splendid views of Bath and the surrounding hills. Midford Castle, is nearby and beautifully set in wooded grounds. It was built to an unusual design and is said to commemorate a gambling triumph of its then owner, Henry Roebuck.
Norton St Philip
The George Inn can be found in this small village. It’s a fine watering hole of stone and timber, believed to be the oldest in England. The village’s church also met with the approval of Samuel Pepys who thought the chimes of its bells ‘mighty tuneable’.
Nunney
This is a picturesque village on the eastern fringe of the Mendips with a magnificent castle dating back to 1373. Although not that large, it is one of the most impressive in Somerset. It is built on a narrow rectangular plan with a large tower at each corner.
Wansdyke
The name given to an extensive earth work which stretches for 50 miles from Hampshire across Wiltshire’s Marlborough Downs and across northern Somerset to Dundry Hill. One of the best-preserved sections of Wansdyke is not far from Bath, near the village of Corston. The earthwork consists of a single bank with a ditch on the north side. Its dates back to the Roman occupation, or shortly after and was likely built as a boundary between the Mercian people and the West Saxons. Camp, an Iron Age fortification whose north side is a section of Wansdyke.
